Employee Resource Group (ERG) leaders combine their passion for people with a selfless desire to make the workplace a better place.

It’s time to recharge the batteries, invest in your own development and master these 4 key areas to reboot your ERG.

Leadership Buy In

70% of large change programmes fail and a lack of senior leadership buy-in is one of the main reasons. When it comes to DEI&B it’s even more critical because of the level of resistance you will face.

Week 1 - In the leadership buy-in module, you will:

  • be able to effectively articulate the moral and business case, values and benefits of DEI&B improvements to senior leaders

  • develop persuasive communication skills to deal with leaders who are at different stages of DEI&B maturity

  • explore topics that may present barriers to senior leader buy-in e.g. internal backlash, claims of ‘reverse discrimination’

  • learn how to engage with busy, senior stakeholders

Set up for success

Inclusiveness scores are lower for employees who are members of ineffective ERGs than employees who are not in an ERG at all. Creating an engaging and effective group that people want to be a part of is key.

Week 2 -In the Set Up for Success module, you will:

  • develop clear terms of reference that starts by defining the problem, drafting a compelling purpose, scope and goals

  • create and develop an ERG leadership team with clear roles, responsibilities and succession planning

  • analyse stakeholders, identify and recruit group members

  • create communication and governance structures that are right for the group and the wider organisation

Influence & Engage

ERGs often find themselves with few resources, piecemeal data, and very little positional power, which makes the task at hand even harder.

Week 3 - In the Influence & Engage module, you will:

  • explore what good engagement looks like

  • develop techniques to engage widely through ERG events and meetings and increase collaboration with other ERGs by working intersectionally

  • create compelling narratives, elevator pitches and stories to communicate the ERG’s impact at all levels of the organisation

  • design a communication plan that will promote awareness, foster inclusion and belonging, and include direct feedback from stakeholders on the group’s effectiveness

Get Things Done

When all is said and done, it’s about getting things done. This is where even the best ERGs can struggle, become disillusioned, get frustrated and start to feel fatigued. It’s important to remain evidence-based, data-driven and focused on goals

Week 4 - In the Get Things Done module, you will:

  • develop an understanding of the change management methodologies you need to avoid being a ‘talking shop’ and start delivering real change through ERG projects

  • create a roadmap of prioritised initiatives, outcomes and benefits for the ERG

  • learn how to coordinate projects and secure resources to deliver ERG initiatives

  • define ways of celebrating success and publicising the group’s wins

This training is for you if…

You are the leader or DEI&B champion of an existing or new employee resource group, affinity or other staff-led network.

A common challenge for employee groups is that attendees become demotivated because they turn into talking shops with little output.

We all love awareness events but many networks find it difficult to deliver initiatives that will have a sustainable impact on inclusion and belonging.
